An Introduction to Crankies. Workshop with Jen Eccles
Crankies are a type of moving panorama that were hugely popular in the 19th century. They are essentially really long landscape artworks, turned on a crank, creating a scrolling image – a bit like film. In recent times there has been a trend to use translucent canvas, allowing artworks to be backlit and augmented with shadow puppetry. In this workshop, you will learn all about crankies, shadow puppetry, how the crank structure is built, see and operate one that we’ve prepared earlier, and make your own ones using coffee cups.
Jen Eccles, an experienced scenic designer, craft maker, and co-creator of the crankie artwork featured in For the Dead, leads this two hour workshop. All materials included.
Tickets $28/$35 (includes materials).
