For the Dead
French poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut was a 14th Century colossus whose influence is still felt today. We present a selection of his choral works, culminating with his groundbreaking composition Messe de Nostre Dame. The mass is accompanied by a 50 meter long moving panorama created especially for the piece; an immense scrolling artwork turned on cranks, backlit and augmented with shadow puppetry.
“Machaut’s Notre Dame… is the genesis of modern music” – LA Times.
”Machaut’s Mass is unquestionably the most famous composition of the fourteenth century” – Gramophone.
